THESE BOOTS...

are made for WALKIN'...
(NOT kicking.)

Friday as I was flying over the midwest, it dawned on me that I forgot to pack a Sunday outfit for church. I didn't even have shoes. It's a long story. So when I arrived, Joy was good enough to take me shopping. I love her style and wanted some of it to rub off on me. One of the items that we picked up were these boots. They scare me. I've never owned a pair...EVER! Yesterday I wore them to church. Because we were a smidge late to my brother's ward, we sat in the overflow area. Instead of benches, we were sitting in open-backed chairs. I quickly found out that I am NOT so graceful in my boots. Twice...TWICE I kicked the bum of the lady sitting in front of me. TWICE! It happened as I crossed my legs. After the second time I didn't dare move my feet. What can I say? I'm a rookie.

(would it be appropriate to say that I kicked some serious booty?!?!)

BYU VS. UTAH

It was a GREAT game!
BYU won in overtime.
What a treat to be there in person.
I watched the game with these lovely ladies.
(April and Emily)
Pre-game stuff.
This was the last play in overtime before BYU scored a touchdown.
The BYU fans rush the field.
(this picture was right before overtime started...we were COLD)
More fans rushing the field.
Someone kicked over my hot chocolate in all the excitement. OOPS!
The WHOLE field covered in fans.
It was an awesome sight!!!
We had a blast and I'm so very thankful for the opportunity to go and see the game yesterday. Thanks again April!

TODAY I'M

THANKFUL...
To have arrived in Utah safely.
I'm also thankful to spend time with my twin brother and his family. It's always a good time. Last night we were given two tickets to the BYU basketball game. (thank you Dallan and April) It was a fun date. We tried to take a picture during some of the timeouts but I was laughing SO hard that most of them came out blurry, and half the time I had the camera on the wrong settings that it wasn't even taking our picture. Have you ever been so tired that you can't stop laughing? That was me.
(Sleep deprivation will do that...)

Lots to do...lots to see!
More updates soon. :)

TODAY I'M

THANKFUL...
For my healthy body. It's been a whole month since my surgery. Aside from being tired, (night times with Ben will do that to me) I am back to normal. I even started back with my Muay Thai class and weekly basketball games. Tonight was NOT a good night. My plans were to go to my kickboxing class and head over to the gym for some basketball with my husband. Right before I left, I was hurrying down the stairs...and when I hit the bottom, I rolled my left ankle. (chronic basketball injury) As I was falling down, my neck hit the post on the metal gate we have at the bottom of the stairs. I'm lucky my neck wasn't punctured as the momentum of my fall was hard. I have a nice abrasion though. I shook it off and went to class anyway. After my class I drove over to the gym to meet Steve. I told him I probably wouldn't play because I was exhausted from my class AND I was afraid I might really injure my ankle because it was feeling weak. I gave in and decided to play. (they needed subs) My first trip down the floor, I jumped up for a rebound, came down and made a quick pass to my teammate. That's when I heard a "POP" in my left calf. Down I went. I couldn't even walk off the floor. It's amazing how necessary the calf muscle is to simply walk. I've never injured it before. Now I've torn it and I'll be on crutches for awhile. Because I know what it is like NOT to be healthy, it makes me even more thankful when my body is healthy and functioning.

TODAY I'M...

THANKFUL...
for pajamas.
Especially when I get to stay in them
ALL DAY!!!

OFFICER "ORTY"

LOOK who's in the paper today!!! :)
(School Resource Officer Steve Orton shows his sense of humor in
his choice of door decor to his office at Laconia High School.)
From the streets to the halls,
'Officer Orty'
is there!

Steve Orton is now a familiar face in the halls of Laconia High School, as he is a few months into his second year as the school resource officer. A member of the Laconia Police Department for 10 years, Orton, who lives in Gilford with his family, was hired right out of the police academy he attended in Massachusetts by then-Laconia Police Chief Bill Baker. Orton said he loves his job because there's always something new to see or learn. He said the words of a police academy acquaintance best sums up how he feels about the profession. "Police work is like having a front-row seat to the greatest show on Earth," Orton said. "You get to see things and experience things that you wouldn't in any other career."He said he has particularly enjoyed the last year as a school resource officer, getting to know the students and teachers and staff of Laconia High School. While in a sense being a teenager hasn't changed much since Orton himself was in high school, he said the teens of today have to face many more dangers at a younger age. "The things that children are faced with today are inconceivable," Orton said. "Yes, when I was in high school, girls got pregnant and children used drugs, but the fact that they are starting now at such a young age to use drugs and have sex is mind-boggling." He said he really enjoys being able to talk to students about problems they may be facing and to offer positive solutions. "I've had some tough personal conversation with children about the things that are going on in their lives, things that I wouldn't have opportunity to talk about with them if I was on the street," Orton said. "I like that they trust me enough to talk me about their lives."In his spare time, Orton likes to spend time with his family, which includes his wife, Rebecca, and their four children, Kayla 13, Kaleb 12, Stevie 10 and Benjamin, 7. Most of all, he said enjoys being able to help or offer advice to students dealing with serious issues. Being the father of a large family has made Orton appreciate his father even more, though he said he always considered him a role model. Both his parents were teachers, he said, and placed an emphasis on education. " He has an old school work ethic, he's very grounded, very down to Earth, but also extremely intelligent," Orton said. "He placed education very high on the importance list." Orton said his father has always been a person he could depend on. "He was just that solid guy. He was just always there ... to kick me in the butt when I needed it and to hug me when I needed it." Orton said. Before moving to Massachusetts in 1996, Orton grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah, then attended college in Idaho, where he met his future wife, Rebecca. The two fell in love and wedded after he had spent about a year in college, taking criminal justice classes, Orton said. As his wife is originally from Massachusetts, the two decided to relocate. For a few years, Orton said he managed a Domino's Pizza franchise and was in a position to own a franchise when he realized he wasn't doing what he wanted to be doing. "It's just what I fell into," Orton said. He said it was at wife's prompting, who asked him if was really happy with his job, that he quit and decided to either go back to school or find a more fulfilling career. It was then he decided to go to the police academy, and the couple used most of their savings to support their growing family while he completed the six month training program. While Orton loves to go back to Utah to visit his parents and other family members, he said also loves life in the Lakes Region, so much so that he is hard pressed to find anything he would change about it. "I guess if I could change something it would be the mentality of some about the Lakes Region," Orton said, adding that he's proud of the way the communities pull together to do things like clean up a park or make it safer for children. "We do have something to offer here. I'd like to see us change our views about what's really important in the community," Orton said.

TODAY I'M...

THANKFUL...
For the game of basketball
and the fact that I get to PLAY it.
Last night was my first night back.
(in a long time)
Felt great.
I play with a bunch of guys. Some of them have a hard time getting out of the house to come play, because they've worked all day and their wives don't want them to go. Steve likes to tease them by saying, "well...if you were smart like me, you would have married a ball player."
(you see because I don't give him a hard time about going)
It's our DATE NIGHT.
And we have FUN!
(aside from rubbing shoulders with stinky, sweaty, hairy men)

TODAY I'M...

THANKFUL...
For funny MEMORIES.
See this picture above?
It's from our Disney trip.
We were riding the MUMMY Ride.
It was a little frightful.
Check out my three in the front.
They were quite afraid.
NOW...
Check out my husband!
(in red)
LOOK at his face.
He swears he wasn't scared.
I have photogenic proof.
It makes me laugh.
Just to prove himself...
check out this next picture:
It makes me laugh even more.
He didn't want his "man card"
REVOKED,
and felt the need to show me...
that he wasn't afraid.
Then we went on THIS ride:

And here's where it gets funnier.
He claims that I was afraid.
I told him it was "water" in my face.
He held his ground.
So did I.
We're competitive that way.
Just to prove him wrong...
we went back to THIS ride:

Apparently...
I didn't want MY card revoked!
Good times.

TODAY I'M...

THANKFUL...
That I don't have THIS anymore.
It's been with me for two years.
Remember when I asked for your help?
(
here)
I tried lots and lots of remedies.
None seemed to work.
I have been the recipient of MANY jokes.
"Warts up Becky?"
or
"Warts happening?"
or
"WHOA...is that a 6th finger?"
I know...funny. (not)
Today I went to see my surgeon.
It was a follow-up to my thyroid surgery.
Everything is great, my scar is even better.
While I was there,
I reminded my dear surgeon that 18 months ago,
when he put my chest tube in for my pneumothorax...
he promised that he would get rid of it for me.
So today he did.
He numbed that puppy right up and sliced it off.
Goodbye annoying growth...
Hello normal looking hand.
Cool, huh?
